Lindsey's film premieres on Hill

Elizabeth Lindsey
ANYONE wandering through the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C., the other night must have done a double take. The sounds of Hawaiian music could be heard and the aroma of kalua pig, poke and lomi salmon filled the air. The occasion was the D.C. premiere of "Then There Were None," an award-winning TV documentary produced and directed by Elizabeth Lindsey. The documentary chronicles the plight of the once-sovereign Hawaiian people and is due to air nationally on PBS on May 23. Lindsey, a former Miss Hawaii and island actress, got a standing ovation from the crowd composed mostly of ex-islanders and Capitol Hill staffers. Sen. Dan Inouye spoke and praised both Lindsey and Lurline McGregor of Pacific Islanders in Communications, which helped to fund the work. It was a reunion for Sen. Inouye and McGregor, who at one time worked on the senator's Washington staff ...

FIFTY-CENT lei: The materials for the lei created by June Takiki in Architects Hawaii's annual lei-making contest only cost half a buck, but a lot of work went into creating it. Takiki's lei, entitled "Cents of Hawaii," is made up of 50 pennies, one minted in each year since the company began its architectural practice in 1946. Takiki's lei, clever as it was, only finished second in the contest. The winner, a team effort by "The Women of AH," also honored the firm's 50th anniversary. Five feet long, the lei was composed of 50 building blocks made origami-style from business cards collected during the 50 years Architects Hawaii has been in business. Both leis are on view in the lobby of AH's Pacific Tower offices ...

MEMBERS of the Hawaii Opera Theatre and friends of the late Barbara Dougherty, who managed the HOT office here, will hold a celebration of her life tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the HOT rehearsal hall at 987 Waimanu St. behind Flamingo Chuckwagon. Selections from some of her favorite operatic works will be sung.

Suite Sistina

YOU may be aware that the ceiling and walls of Cafe Sistina on King Street are covered with murals, scenes inspired from the Sistine Chapel. The painter, Sergio Mitrotti, is also the culinary artist in the kitchen, but the comparisons to him and Michelangelo come to a screeching halt about this time. Adman Jim Loomis, who represents Rainbow State Paint, knows that company is the only one in Hawaii that sells Benjamin Moore paint, the brand he used when he redid his kitchen at home. So you can imagine his surprise when he found that Sergio eschewed tubes of paint from art supply houses, and was dipping into cans of Benjamin Moore to create his murals. Sergio explained that it was more economical and didn't smell - important for a restaurant - which explains why gift certificates for Cafe Sistina are being given away as prizes during a grand opening celebration for Rainbow State Paint's new store on Dillingham ...

FORD Motor Co. is taking a nightly beating at the hands of Dave Letterman on CBS after beginning a massive recall to repair a problem that causes their vehicles to explode. Dave said they found a box in the Unabomber's cabin that contained enough parts to make an entire Ford station wagon. And that more Escorts have been taken off the street than at any time since Heidi Fleiss was arrested. He even did a Top 10 list of new Ford slogans. My favorite: "Quality is Job One. Putting out the fire is Job Two." ...

Name drops

Fred Piluso
SCRUPLES owner Fred Piluso heralds the scoop that Texan and former isle resident Stacy Sanches has been chosen to be Playboy's "Playmate of the Year" for 1996. Will be announced in Tuesday's issue of the magazine. Fred and old pal Larry Manetti hooked up with the latter's good friend Larry King and with Marlon Brando in tow (not literally!) dined at Steven Seagal's Eclipse Restaurant. No, nonstop talker King and Brando, who keeps making news on his show, didn't kiss once over dinner ...
