"We're been outsourcing our claims to HDS (Hawaii Dental Service) for several years but with our growth we're bringing this in house for control over servicing," Hanzawa said.
HMAA is a Honolulu-based health plan founded in 1990 which specializes in small businesses. HMAA now services more than 22,000 members statewide.
"We're able to be more flexible with dentists on what treatment they want to do," Hanzawa said. Their competitors are Hawaii Dental Service and Hawaii Medical Service Association.
Hanzawa worked for Hawaii Dental Service for 14 years. Her most recent job at HDS was assistant vice president and director of dental claims processing.
