He thinks his name is William D'Souza, but he's not sure. It could just be the name of someone he knew before March 31.

He doesn't know how old he is, where he's from or how he came to be in Hawaii. He has amnesia and attempts to discover his identity have been to no avail.

The man was taken to Castle Hospital about 9 p.m. March 31 by Kailua police answering an anonymous call about a man lying face down in the sand at Kailua Beach Park near the boat ramp, said Castle marketing director Jon Larrabee. It appeared the man had been injured during a robbery because he didn't have a wallet or watch.

He had been semiconscious with a head injury and did not have any identification or personal items except for two luggage tags from a Holiday Inn and a Hotel Selene.

"He can remember sketchy details of events that happened prior to 1980," Larrabee said.

When he woke up, he thought it was 1988, said Tim Dwyer, who has worked with the patient. "He mentioned, I think, Ronald Reagan was president."

Police have tried matching his fingerprints to missing people, and hospital officials have chased every name, phone number and address he can remember to a dead end.

D'Souza has recovered from the bruise to his head but remains at Castle. His short-term memory lasts about four hours, an improvement since he arrived. He has tested at a genius-level IQ rating and is very polite, Dwyer said. He believes the man is from New England because of his memories.

The patient is 5-foot-8, 150 pounds, with a medium build. He has black hair and dark brown eyes. He may be in his mid- to late-20s. Anyone with information can call Sgt. Kurt Kendro at 262-6555.
