Motorists have to ride freeway
waves for a while

Question: Can you get the highway department or the contractor responsible to smooth out a section of the H-1 freeway that was resurfaced recently?

I was traveling, pulling my boat, in the far right lane Ewa-bound in the section between Vineyard and Houghtailing streets and that freeway has more waves there than the ocean.

Answer: The freeway will be resurfaced and smoothed out but motorists will be suffering temporary patches for another 10 months or so. A contractor is digging up lanes and working between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. to reconstruct the base of the freeway, said Marilyn Kali, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation. Each morning before halting work, the contractor puts a temporary rough asphalt layer on the lane so it can be used by early morning commuters. When the contractor is finished with the base, the complete top resurfacing will be done, Kali said.

The yearlong job started only slightly more than a month ago. Whether the contractor is required to make the temporary surface smoother depends on the complaints received.
