Hawaii Opera Theatre mainstay
Barbara Dougherty dies at 52

Barbara A. Dougherty, a sparkplug behind the Hawaii Opera Theatre, died April 30 at home. She was 52.

Originally the secretary for Honolulu Symphony conductor Robert La Marchina, she became executive secretary of the Hawaii Opera Theatre when the symphony and opera separated.

"She became the catalyst of what came after," noted longtime friend Bill Bohan.

"She kept things together and made it work. ... She was totally dedicated to what she did."

She is survived by her husband, Ronald J.; parents Marvin and Shirley Fehr; and brother Jeff Fehr.

Services are pending.


Gisela B. Apana of Wailua Homesteads, Kauai, died April 28 at home.

Apana, 63, was born in Wiesbaden, Germany. She is survived by daughters Sahne Hoelzel, Shirley Apana and Shirlette Burnz; sons Bill, Walter, Danny and Duane; brother Heinz Holzel; 24 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Nicolas D. Dannog of Honolulu, a laborer for the hotel industry, died April 27 in Mahelona Hospital.

Dannog, 85, was born in Banna, Ilocos Norte, the Philippines. He is survived by brothers Alfred, Estaquio, Mariano, Sabino and Theodoro.

Raymond DeRego of Makaha died April 22 in the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.

DeRego, 68, was born in Hawaii. He is survived by brother Frank Jr.; and sisters Ruth Milliora, Mary Rafael and Elizabeth Villacruzes.

Alexander G. Feria of Kailua, a Honolulu Police Department retiree, died April 27 in Kaiser Hospital.

Feria, 77, was born in Honolulu. He is survived by wife Eva W.; son Patrick McGuire; and sister Adelaide F. Mello-Vesey.

Odis T. Gower of Kihei, Maui, died April 27 in Maui Memorial Hospital.

Gower, 79, was born in Chappel Hill, Texas.

David A. Ito of Kula, Maui, a retired Hawaiian Telephone engineer, died April 27 in Wai Ilio Bay, Maui.

Ito, 55, a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War, was born in Kula, Maui.

He is survived by wife Blanche N.; mother Chiyono; son Arlen; daughters Lori Dela Cruz and Paula Ito; brothers Donald and Edward; sister Linda Daida; and three grandchildren.

Mary K.K. Johnson of Honolulu died April 28 in Kaiser Hospital.

Johnson, 83, was born in Laiemaloo, Hawaii. She is survived by husband Louis; sons Louis K., Ned K., Van K., Alexander, Melvyn and Alton; daughters Elizabeth L. Kaalekahi, Lorraine W. Robert T. Keehn of Hilo, formerly of Honolulu, a software programmer, died March 14 in Hilo Hospital.

Henry W.M. Koikoinui of Waianae died April 26 in the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.

Koikoinui, 56, was born in Waiahole. He is survived by wife Evelyn; sons Henry, Derrick, Shane and Nathan; daughters Monica Koikoinui and Trisha Tolentino; brother Joseph Wong; sisters Elizabeth Mahoe and Helen Shelby; and six grandchildren.
