HAWAIIAN Cement is losing one of its most valuable building blocks. Frank "Steiny" Steinmiller, 65, the company's manager for neighbor islands distribution, retires Tuesday after 33 years with the firm. Steiny, a San Jose State grad and former firefighter, was Roosevelt's best all-around athlete in the Class of '49. He was basketball team captain and was a starter in football and baseball. Steiny was raised in Kapahulu where he caddied at Ala Wai. Because of his vast knowledge and enforcement of golf rules, he is known as "The Commissioner" to his weekend gang of golfing gangsters who include: Tim Smythe, Sonny Beamer, Corky Trinidad, Cynthia Child, Kenny Dias, Itchie Miyasato, Allen McKeague, Ken Sakamoto, Earl Aku, Stan Atkins, Yo Arakaki and yours truly. In his retirement, Steiny is looking forward to spending more time with his wife of almost 37 years, Virginia, who deserves a testimonial dinner for keeping up and putting up with him, and children, Shellee Heen and Jill Laboy. And of course he'll be slamming that little white ball down the lush, rolling green fairways. Enjoy your retirement, Steiny. You've earned it ...

The late, great Maiki Aiu Lake was solo dancer and Leinaala Kalama Heine was comic dancer. Singing was Bill Kaiwa and emcee was Michelman ...
