
The "Mother's Favorite Recipes" cookbook, originally published in 1961, is being re-released by the Friends of Waialae School (Parent Teacher Council).
The 100-page softcover collection features classics such as chow fun, Waioli Tea Room apple pie filling, pineapple pickles, and chafing dish doves or squabs.

A recipe from the cookbook follows at the request of Ann Temporal, an Aiea mother of two - first- and second-graders - who's a candidate for a Mother's Day copy.
Mix mochiko and sugar. Add water slowly, mixing to prevent lumping. Stir in 2 or 3 drops of food coloring.1-1/4 cups mochiko (rice flour)
2/3 cup sugar
1-1/4 cups water
Food coloring
Nonstick baking spray, such as Pam
Potato starch
Spray a microwaveable Bundt cake pan with nonstick baking spray. Pour mixture into Bundt pan. Microwave under cook control 60 for 3 minutes. Then cook under cook control 80 for an additional 3 minutes.
Cover a 9-by-13-inch pan with potato starch to prevent sticking. Flip Bundt pan over 9-by-13-inch pan to remove the mochi. Use a plastic knife to slice mochi. Coat each piece with potato starch.
Editor's note: Coconut milk can be used instead of water.
