Aggies blank Wahine to end road trip

LOGAN, Utah - Shontinese Huey hit a record-setting home run to open the second inning and Utah State went on to shut out Hawaii, 6-0, in a Big West Conference women's softball game yesterday.

Huey now holds the Aggie single-season record for homers and is tied for the career lead with 11. Rhealee Thorn held the Wahine to five hits, with Regina Kaaihili's double the only extra-base hit.

Hawaii (33-24 overall, 12-16 in conference), concludes its final BWC season with doubleheaders against visiting UNLV at 5 p.m. Friday and at noon Saturday.



VULCANS, 'SWORDS SPLIT: At Hilo, Kelly Guerin scattered 10 hits and struck out five in a 7-0 complete-game victory as the University of Hawaii at Hilo gained a split with Chaminade in an NCAA Division II women's softball doubleheader yesterday at Carvalho Field.

In the opener, Chiho Bauske scored the game's only run in the top of the first and Kristen Varagne limited the Vulcans to six hits in a 1-0 Chaminade victory.

The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth. Hawaii-Hilo used five hits, including four consecutive singles, and an error to score four runs.

Hawaii-Hilo (33-19) and Chaminade (13-23) conclude the regular season today with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Carvalho Park.



WAHINE FINISH SEVENTH: At Ojai, Calif., the University of Hawaii women's tennis team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 7-0, Saturday to clinch seventh place at The Big West Conference championships.

Petra Turek, Michelle Radman, Amy Kusch, Salani Lesa, Natalie Lum and Alicia Lee all won singles matches for the Wahine.



VOLLEYBALL WINNERS: Marc Haine and Kisi Haine won the Oahu Volleyball Association coed open tournament held at Queen's Surf Beach yesterday.

Sylvester Aloisio and Kristal Attwood finished second.



SEASIDERS TO CHINA: The Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's volleyball team left today for a goodwill tour of China. The Seasiders, the defending NAIA champions, will be in China until May 11.



GRANTS AWARDED: Twenty athletes have been awarded quarterly scholarships by the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation to help them defray their training expenses

A total of $18,000 in aid was dispersed to: swimmers Meghan Atwood, Kevin Flanagan, Andrea Fukumoto, Kristen Nagata, Jan Okada, Raenell Soujot and Kimberly and Stephen Adler; water polo players Samuel Chillingworth, Douglass Cole, Bryan Helfer and Alohalani Jamias; paddlers Punua Souza, Kanoelani Kane and Cameron Ventura; kayaker Jenny Erwin; sailors Summer Craig and Roger Arnemann, and volleyball player Koa Ostrem.

The Adler siblings' scholarships were made available through the Terrence McCarthy Endowment Fund. The Muriel Macfarlane Flanders Endowment Fund helped Souza and Ostrem's aid came through the Tom "Daddy" Haine Endowment Fund.

The ODKF has awarded $33,250 this year for Hawaii athletes and organizations. The next deadline for athletic grants is Aug. 15.

SILVERSWORDS SIGN TRIO: Three California junior college players have signed letters of intent to play for the Chaminade men's basketball team next season.

Committing to the Silverswords are 6-foot-9 center Matt Umbarger, 6-3 wing Roman Rivera and William Antonio, a 6-4 wing.

Umbarger played for Cuesta College in Stanton, Calif., the league runner-up. He averaged five points and seven rebounds.

Rivera was third in 3-point shooting among California junior college players and was named all-state and all-conference. He averaged 21 points and 6 rebounds.

Antonio averaged 16.5 points for Allan Hancock College. He was a first-team All-Western States Conference pick, shooting 50 percent from the field and 44 percent from 3-point range.



TENNIS CLINICS: The United States Professional Tennis Association's "Tennis Across America" program will conduct free clinics for players of all ages and levels May 11.

The association's teaching professionals will offer instruction at public and private tennis facilities, parks and recreation centers, schools and other facilities.
