Safe community his niche

It's taken eight years, but Alexander Garcia has finally found his niche as a police officer in his community.

Other officers in the Wahiawa District have taken on projects that put them out into the community and get them familiar with residents in their areas. The Honolulu Police Department calls it "community policing."

Garcia said some officers are involved with cleaning graffiti, while others have focused on making the city parks safer.

Until a few months ago, Garcia was still "trying to find my niche."

Then, last Christmas Day, two homes in Mililani were burglarized by a "grinch," who stole all of the presents before they were even opened.

"That pissed me off," Garcia said.

So, last month he launched a three-month anti-burglary home inspection project. Garcia inspects his neighbors' homes and teaches them how to safeguard themselves against burglars.

He approached City Mill and Mililani developer Castle and Cooke to donate materials including glue for window louvers, dowels for securing sliding doors and windows and S-rings to lock louver handles. He also recruited Councilwoman Rene Mansho's office to coordinate the home visits.

Garcia said his efforts at community policing have served several purposes. Not only does he help his neighbors, but he has built a rapport among residents, who recognize him around town and are willing to share with him information that helps him "protect and serve."

"That's how it's supposed to work," Garcia said. "It's the most rewarding job you can find. You're helping people everyday."

The job has even become more enjoyable for the eight-year veteran of the force, who 10 years ago endured harassment by some and received praise from others for helping expose corruption in the state sheriff's office.
