Board of Health lot
open for after-hours parking

QUESTION: Why did the Board of Health change its policy on leaving the parking lot on Punchbowl Street open after hours? We used to park there in the evening when we had relatives to visit at Queen's Hospital.

ANSWER: There's been no change in policy. After 6 p.m. you are welcome to park in the public lot in front of the Department of Health on Punchbowl Street, or in the state employee lot in back, said Harold Sonomura, head of the automotive management division in the state Department of Accounting and General Services.

The lot in front, entered from Punchbowl Street, now has meters instead of a gate and attendant. Those meters must be fed only between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The lot is open and parking is free during the other hours.

The state's large parking lot for employees on the side and in back of the Health Department is open and free during nonwork hours for government employees.

You'll know when free public parking is allowed because the entry gate on Miller Street will remain in the open lifted position. During those times you must both enter and exit from Miller Street.
