George now a Golden Olympian

Peter George of Honolulu is among the last 20 of Xerox's 100 Golden Olympians announced today in Atlanta, site of this year's Summer Olympics. George, a 66-year-old dentist, participated in three Olympics, 1948 in London, 1952 in Helsinki, Finland, and 1956 in Melbourne, Australia.

The stellar weight lifter was the United States middleweight champion from 1949 through 1952 and again in 1957 and won five world title between 1947 and 1956.

At the Olympics, he won silver medals in 1948 and 1956 and took home the gold in 1952 with a total lift of 400 kilograms.



TIGERS BLANK WAHINE: At Ojai, Calif., the University of Hawaii lost its quarterfinal-round match to Pacific, 5-0, in the Big West Conference women's tennis championships yesterday.

In another match, Maui's Jan Okada, the No. 1 singles player for UC Santa Barbara, led the Gauchos to a 5-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton.



VULCANS WIN TWO: At Hayward, Calif., the University of Hawaii at Hilo women's softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from Cal State Hayward, 3-2 and 3-1, yesterday.

The Vulcans (32-20) won the opener on an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning. Kelly Guerin earned the victory with a five-hitter.

Jana Kovar pitched a two-hitter in the second game.



VIERRA HUNTS FOR A TEAM: Former University of Hawaii pitcher Joey Vierra asked for and received his release from the Texas Rangers' organization last Friday.

He is presently on the mainland waiting to see if his agent can land him a job with another team.

Vierra, sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City of the American Association early in spring training, got off to a rough start with a 9.64 ERA in four appearances.
