In the past, proms were only attended by couples. Parents have told me that it was sorta "understood" that you didn't go to the prom unless you had a date. That totally sucks.
I guess back then they never heard of going stag with a bunch of friends. It must have been stressful for students to find a date. Girls probably were hoping a guy would ask them to the prom. Guys were probably wondering which girl to ask and hoping to avoid rejection.High school is supposed to represent the "best years of your life."
Why should anyone miss their class prom because they don't have a date?
That is why times have changed. More often now, students have been going to proms or banquets with a bunch of friends. And you never know, maybe someone in that group may have a little crush on you.
It's been a while since our parents have been stressing out on their proms. Now proms have created new stress for them. Now they're taking care of their teens' proms.
Parents going through their first prom with their teen see it as exciting. I asked a few parents about their experiences and found that mothers of daughters suffer a little more stress than mothers of sons.
Finding the prom dress is one of mothers' traumas. Some of my friends and I agree that it's necessary to have our moms along when searching for a dress since it's so hard to find the right dress.
Moms also worry about setting up appointments. Hair appointments, facial appointments, etc.
They want to make sure there's plenty of time to get ready for the big event. On the other hand, most guys I talked to said their parents didn't stress out at all. Some guys were pretty much on their own in getting their tuxedo. From what I hear, guys with dates stress out more than their parents. First, they have to worry about what kind of flowers to get.
Their options include the bouquet of flowers, which make it looks as if the couple is getting married. Then there are the long-stemmed flowers which makes it look as if a girl has just won a pageant.
For some guys, it'll be their first experience wearing a tux, and maybe they don't know its nuances, such as whether the bow tie goes above or beneath the shirt collar. Other guys just wonder whether or not their pimples will go away.BUT enough about the guys. I believe that girls go through more stress.
At Castle's Junior Prom I worried because I had no idea what to expect.
First, I was in a slump because I wasn't sure if I could find a dress. I missed half a day of school in my search.I did my own hair. I practiced at least twice doing my hair before the big day and timed myself to see how long it would take. That day, it took me longer than I expected. I'm not the only one who had problems.
One of my friends had her hair done professionally, but it came out messy. She and her mom tried fixing it and in the rush, my friend got the side of her head burned by a curling iron.
Next I had to get dressed and my mom told me over and over not to rip my pantyhose. Of course it ripped. I learned that clear nail polish helps stop the rip from getting any bigger, but rushing to my sister's room to get her polish, the run grew with each step I took. That was the only time I used those $7.50 hose.
After that, I stamped around the whole house looking for all my accessories, and I hadn't even put on my makeup. I finally got ready, but it was a super hot day and I began to perspire.
Finally, my date arrived and we were off. I had a wonderful time, and I guess all my stressing paid off in turning just another Saturday into a perfect evening.
I guess stress is part of what makes the prom experience so memorable.
