S.F. folks left hearts in Hawaii

THE Kapalakiko Hawaiian Music Festival held its seventh annual get-together in San Francisco recently, and a hearty band of isle expatriates gathered to listen to Hawaiian music and help raise money for Kapalakiko Productions. The head of the group is Saichi Kawahara, a musician I met when his trio was performing at the Hawaiian Barbecue & Luau Foods eatery in S.F. He puts out a quarterly newsletter which has been must reading for ex-isle folks hungry for news of their homeland. Of course now the Star-Bulletin is available on the Internet, but not all have access, so the newsletter is still a good source of information ...

AT the most recent meeting, besides the music of the Kapalakiko Trio, Dennis Pavao sang, and Clyde Sproat brought back tons of memories when he "talked story" about growing up in Hawaii and fending off dive-bombing mosquitoes with FLIT. Among winners of the Aloha Spirit Awards were James and Monica Neves Long, who ran the Polynesian Hideaway nightclub near the Cow Palace 30 years ago and presented such island talent as Genoa Keawe and the late Sonny Chillingworth, Gabby Pahinui and Kui Lee. So what did they feed the expatriates? Spam musubi, saimin and haupia. The evening ended with a traditional "Hawaii Aloha" with everyone clasping hands ...

Tamayo Otsuki
TWO comics are performing currently with Japanese comedienne Tamayo Otsuki. The two, Jackson Purdue and Steven Pearl, had the hardest time tracking her down when she was here for some advance publicity appearances. Tamayo had told them where she'd been staying, and try as they would, they couldn't locate a Leaf Hotel anywhere. At long last, they put it together and found her at the Reef! Tamayo's show is on the neighbor islands this weekend. It'll be at the King Kamehameha in Kona tonight and at the Maui Beach tomorrow night. And no, Tamayo won't be singing, "Beyond the Leaf." ...

Daze of Our Lives

WELL, we've had Secretaries' Day and Take Our Daughter to Work Day this week, so surely we can give it a rest for a while. Oops, that's right: Mother's Day is right around the corner. And if you're looking for something to really surprise mom on Her Day, how about tea with an English Lord? Piers Anthony Weymouth Wedgwood, the fourth Lord of Barlaston, will be in town to host the Kapiolani Health Foundation's Mother's Day fashion show and tea. Yes, that's "Wedgwood" as in fine china. Lord Wedgwood will be enjoying the tea service at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental on May 12 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Fashions will be by Laura Ashley, Princess Kaiulani and Liberty House Liz Claiborne collections. For tickets call 973-3109 ...

GOT an old Apple Mac SE or Mac Classic gathering dust in a closet? The Pacific Aerospace Museum could really use one for electronic informational signage. It'll need a hard disk of at least 5 megabytes as well, which could be donated separately. All donations are tax-deductible. Call the museum at 839-0777 ... USA Today put the knock on Hootie and the Blowfish's new album, "Fairweather Johnsons," by stating it was more like a "relaxing shoulder massage" than a "jolt to the gut." I don't know exactly what that critic was looking for in her music, but I'll take the massage any time ...

Wild thing

Jim Fowler
THE host of Mutual of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom," Jim Fowler, was at Sacred Hearts Academy gym Wednesday to do an animal show. A frequent guest on the old Johnny Carson show, Fowler chose Sacred Hearts because fifth-grader Iris Han was one of four grand prize winners of Flower's "Creature Feature" contest in Super Science magazine. He showed the Academy kids a variety of creatures, including a macaw, turtle, bullfrog, chameleon and even a Hawaiian blind snake ...
