Ala Moana gears up for new neighbor

With the state's new convention center being constructed about two blocks away, the Ala Moana Hotel figures to be real busy in mid 1998 when the center opens.

"Basically, it's definitely on our minds. To me its really exciting and we're thinking long-term to when the convention center opens," said Debbie Ann Kato, the hotel's new convention service manager. The 1,168-room hotel is updating its computer reservation system, she said.

Kato has seven years' experience in the industry, most recently as a guest service agent at the Hawaii Prince Hotel. She was a convention service coordinator at the Hawaiian Regent Hotel, and started in the industry in 1988 as a sales intern at Otaka Inc. After one year, she was a marketing employee at Otaka.

Kato earned a bachelor's in business administration/travel industry management in 1990 at the University of Hawaii.
