No quarterback decisions until
the fall at UH

It's too early to tell whether Johnny Macon or
Glenn Freitas has the inside track

Barring some last-second improvement by one or an unexpected collapse by the other, University of Hawaii quarterbacks Glenn Freitas and Johnny Macon will exit spring practice the way they came in - dead even.

"We'll certainly have a resolution by the opening game with Boston College," Rainbows head coach Fred vonAppen said after yesterday's practice.

"That's why we practice to see who can do what and whether they know what to do with the system you have in place. And they're both still learning.

"Johnny's very athletic. But he's having trouble with his progression reads. He just goes too fast. Glenn has a little better field presence at times, but doesn't throw the football inside as well as he does outside."

Hunter Young is the No. 3 man in the current formula and will likely remain there when fall camp rolls around this August.

"Hunter is a redshirt freshman," vonAppen said. "We stop and cheer if he gets the snap from center."

Hawaii also recruited a pair of high school quarterbacks, who will join the fray in fall camp.

But at this point, the likely starter for the first game will either be Freitas or Macon.

"I don't think it's bad that we probably won't name a No. 1 quarterback this spring," vonAppen said. "We'd like to keep it competitive through the summer.

"That doesn't constitute a controversy. We're only seven days in. It's just too early to make a determination because we still have a lot of ground to cover, not only at that position, but at all the other positions as well."

As expected, the Rainbows will run some Houston veer option to make the most of Macon's and Freitas' ability to run with the football.

Macon carried it 107 times for 378 yards and six touchdowns last year, while Freitas had 318 yards on 91 carries and 12 touchdowns.

Macon started the last six games of the season. The Long Beach, Calif., junior hit 68 of 152 passes for 985 yards and six touchdowns.

Freitas started four games before being injured. The former Waianae High standout hit 34 of 63 passes for 417 yards and two touchdowns. The senior also was the nation's scoring leader for several games in 1995.
