Mitchell, Chin win Big Island championships

MAUNA KEA, Hawaii - Randy Mitchell and David Chin of the Navy-Marine golf course fired a final-round 66 to win the Big Island Candies Scotch Four-Ball Championship with a 131 total yesterday at the Hapuna Golf Course.

The golfers competed in a front-nine Scotch format and a back-nine scramble yesterday.

Shane Abe and Dan Herek of Ko Olina were second with a 135 total. Tied for third were first-round leaders Marty Keiter and Donn Perno and Kenny Springer and Kevin Ralbovsky at 136.



VULCANS SWEEP: At San Francisco, the University of Hawaii at Hilo defeated San Francisco State, 3-0 and 10-2, in a nonconference women's softball doubleheader yesterday.

The Vulcans improved to 30-18.



WAHINE FINISH THIRD: At Long Beach, Calif., the University of Hawaii women's golf team took third place in the Big West Conference golf championship yesterday with a 993 total.

San Jose State won its 10th consecutive title with a 916 score.

Dawn Kaneshiro led the Wahine with a 244, good for 10th place, one stroke ahead of teammate Julie Miyagi. Both golfers were named to the All-BWC second team.

SJSU's Janice Moodie won her third consecutive title with 218.



RAINBOW BASEBALL BANQUET: The annual Hui Kokua Kinipopo awards banquet for the University of Hawaii baseball team will be held May 6 in the Hawaii Prince Hotel's Mauna Kea Ballroom.

HPU'S LONO HONORED: Hawaii Pacific University's Jarnett Lono is the NAIA Far West Region softball player of the week.

The freshman second baseman was 9-for-11 with five RBIs, a double and three runs scored against Chaminade last week.

The Sea Warriors (27-10) are ranked third in the nation and are preparing for the regional playoffs at Azusa, Calif., May 9-10.



SWAMP ROMP SET: The second annual CSSG-3 Swamp Romp will be held on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

The Marines of Combat Services Support Group challenge businesses and organizations island-wide to compete in a five-mile run and obstacle course at the base.
