Margerum sets 4 state records

Joy Margerum, 35, of Kamuela, set state records in the high jump (4 feet, 9 inches), long jump (18 feet, 4 inches), 100-meter dash( 12.8 seconds) and 200-meter dash (25.8 seconds) in her age group at last Sunday's All Comers track and field meet at Cooke Field.

This was Margerum's first competition since winning five events at the Master's Indoor National Championships in Greensboro, N.C., in March. At that meet, she set an American women's record (35-39 age group) in the 60-meter dash with a time of 9.56 seconds.

She is the wife of University of Hawaii assistant football coach Ken Margerum and she is the track coach at Hawaii Prep.



IN THIRD PLACE:

At Long Beach, Calif., the University of Hawai women's golf team had a 653 total after yesterday's two rounds and was in third place at the Big West Conference championships, 38 strokes behind leader New Mexico State.

Dawn Kaneshiro was the top Wahine at 159. A.J. Eathorne led the individual race with a 146.

KEITER, PERNO TAKE LEAD:

The team of Marty Keiter and Donn Perno from Kapalua have the lead after the first day of the Scotch Four Ball golf tournament at the Hapuna Course.

The pair lead the field of 40 professionals with a score of 64.

In second place at 65 are Randy Mitchell and David Chin.

WAC HONORS:

Alex Sugai and Alex Simon of the University of Hawaii have been named to the all-Western Athletic Conference men's tennis team.

ICE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT:

The 13th annual Hawaiian Classic ice hockey tournament began yesterday at the Ice Palace and will run through Thursday.

Games are from 8:30 a.m. to noon and again at 9:45 p.m.
