Mailing report cards would cost too much

QUESTION: Why don't schools mail report cards to parents so we can see how our kids are doing? Now we take their word for it and do not find out problems until too late.

ANSWER: Cost is the big reason Hawaii public schools do not mail report cards to parents, said Greg Knudsen, spokesman for the state Department of Education.

Stamps alone would cost nearly $60,000 each time schools mail the report cards home for nearly 187,000 students.

If students are forging signatures and are not bringing their report cards home, it is reasonable to guess they also would be able to intercept their report cards sent home in the mail.

If your child has not brought home a report card so far this school year, ask your child about it. Then check with the school, where grade reports are kept.

If all else fails, ask the school or your child's teacher to retain the report card and tell you when you should come to the school to get it.

Individual schools have varying procedures for report cards, but all have some system to notify parents of the students' progress.
