Shintaku, 76, co-founded
Big Way chain

Fred H. "Windy" Shintaku of Hawaii, co-founder of the Big-Way Supermarkets and Shopping Center who, after retiring, became a consultant for several supermarkets, died Monday.

Shintaku, 76, received the "Fifth Class of the Order of the Rising Sun" award by the Emperor of Japan. He helped the Japanese in development of supermarkets in Japan.

Shinatku started his grocery career in 1932 helping in the family store, K. Shintaku Store. He took over the family business in 1952.

Born in Waipahu, he is survived by wife Ruth K.; daughter Sharon Toma; brothers Roy K., Morio and Steven Tamotsu; sisters Sally N. Blankenship and Lillian S. Ishii; and two grandchildren.

Memorial service: 6 p.m. Friday at Hosoi Garden Mortuary, 30 N. Kukui St. Call after 5 p.m.



Kikue Agena of Honolulu died April 8 in Kuakini Hospital. Agena, 94, was born in Koloa, Kauai. She is survived by sons Masaru and George; daughters Alice Agena and Betty Naito; sister Mildred Fujii; and two grandchildren. Private services.

Harry H. Amaki of Waipahu, a retired Pearl Harbor machinist, died Monday in St. Francis-West Hospital. Amaki, 78, a 100th Infantry Battalion veteran, was born in Makaweli, Kauai. He is survived by wife Margaret M.; daughter Karen F. Nakamura; brother Kumeo; sisters Hisae Kawaguchi and Mitsuko Tomita; and two grandchildren. Catherine E.W. Hansen of Honolulu died Thursday in Tripler Hospital. Hansen, 77, was born in Oregon. She is survived by husband Wayne S.; sons Wayne S. Jr., Christian and Marshall; daughter April; brother John Shaw; sister Isobel Hudson; and a grandchild. Services will be held later.

Otto M. Ikeda of Norwalk, Conn., father of Clyde S. Ikeda of Honolulu and brother of Albert Ikeda of Hawaii, died Wednesday in Norwalk. Ikeda, 70, a U.S. Army World War II veteran and retired chemical engineer, was born in Havre, Mo. He is also survived by wife Dorothy K.; daughter Dr. Debra M.; brothers William and Ted; and sisters Dorothy Ito and Sue Tong. Memorial services to be held on the mainland.

Kenichi "Kenneth" Ito of Kapolei, retired president of Finance Home Builders Ltd., died April 11 in Kuakini Hospital. Ito, 77, was born in Waialua. He is survived by wife Kimiko; son David K.; daughters Sandra M. Arashiro, Lilyan T. Ushijima and Thelma E. Wilcher; and seven grandchildren Private services.

John K. "Johnny" Kaukau of Lahaina died last Friday in Kula Hospital. Kaukau, 85, born in Lahaina, is survived by wife Mary K.D.; daughters Carol M. Kauweloa and Lei "Dolly" Hough; son Leroy "Duke"; sister Kanoe D. McGuire; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Beatrice S. Kimura of Kula, Maui, died Tuesday in Aiea. Kimura, 86, was born in Wailuku. Harold D. Lee of California, formerly of Honolulu, a senior vice president for several banks in California, died April 2 in Anaheim. Lee, 54, a former weather officer for the U.S. Air Force, was born in Honolulu. Yasunobu Maesaka of Waianae, a Schofield Commissary retiree, died last Saturday in Kuakini Hospital. Maesaka, 81, was born in Hilo. He is survived by son Stanley K.Y.; daughters Harriet L.Y. Carlos and Shirley K.Y.
