Lum, Rapanot sign with UH

Pitcher Joyce Lum of University High and Waimea High School infielder Alison Rapanot, two of Hawaii's top prep players, have signed letters of intent to play for the University of Hawaii women's softball team next season.

Lum, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Player of the Year, was 13-2 this past season with a 0.76 ERA. The 5-foot-6 pitcher/first baseman batted .540 this year and also participated in the 18-under ASA Junior Olympic National Tournament last summer.

Rapanot, the two-time Kauai Interscholastic Federation Player of the Year, hit .415 her senior season with seven home runs and 15 RBIs. Wahine coach Bob Coolen expects to use Rapanot at third base.

Hawaii earlier signed Dana Degen, a 5-9 power hitting catcher/ outfielder from Helix High in La Mesa, Calif.



WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

USA Wrestling-Hawaii will hold a freestyle tournament on Saturday at Camp Smith. Weigh-in and registration is from 8 to 9 a.m. with competition starting at 10 a.m..

There is a one-time registration fee of $25 (good for all tournaments) and a $3 tournament fee.

Minors must be registered by their parents.



BEACH VOLLEYBALL

The Oahu Volleyball Association will hold a women's open tournament

Saturday and a men's AA event Sunday at the Queen's Surf Beach Sand Box starting at 9 a.m. each day.

GENTLE TO AUSTRALIAN TEAM

University of Hawaii freshman pitcher Kelly Gentle has been selected to the developmental squad for her native Australia's Olympic team. Following the completion of this season, she will join the New South Wales under-23 team, a feeder club for the national team.

Hawaii All-American pitcher Brooke Wilkins is currently pitching for the Australian Olympic softball team. Both Wilkins and Gentle are expected to return to the Wahine next season.



HPU SIGNS THREE

Marlon Short, a 6-foot-guard from Skyline (Calif.) College, has signed a letter of intent to play for the Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team.

Short averaged 20.6 points for the Trojans last season en route to being named an honorable mention on the All-California Community College all-star team.

The Sea Warriors also obtained commitments from two other junior college players, Corey Reincke, a 6-7 forward from Kellogg (Mich.) Community College, and 6-5 Stacy Nolan, a forward out of Cerritos (Calif.) College.

Reincke, a two-time Western Community College all-star, averaged 18.5 points and seven rebounds for the Falcons last season. Nolan averaged 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds last year for the Bruins.
