Settlement ends HIV suit against hospital

Queen's Medical Center has settled a lawsuit brought by a medical worker who said she contracted the AIDS virus from an infected needle.

Her lawyer would not disclose details of the settlement.

According to court documents, the 38-year-old Diagnostic Laboratories employee contracted the virus after withdrawing blood from a patient who had AIDS. She was trying to dispose of the needle when she accidentally stuck herself in the finger.

The woman, who now has AIDS, says Queen's did not maintain safe work conditions. Queen's contended the woman's carelessness caused the injury.

The hospital also questioned whether she had acquired the disease through the needle.

Firms, shareholders indicted in money launder scheme

A federal grand jury has indicted Honolulu tax attorney Richard Frunzi and Maui health consultant Henry Blakley for their roles in an alleged scheme to launder more than $400,000 in illegal drug proceeds.

The funds ended up in the bank accounts of Hale Nani Partners, which is seeking to develop an outpatient surgery center on Maui.

Blakley and Frunzi are shareholders of Evets, Ltd., which owns 80 percent of Hale Nani Partners. Former state House Speaker Daniel Kihano, also an Evets shareholder, was not named in the indictment.

Kihano's attorney, Ben Cassiday, said this should put to rest any rumors that Kihano had a role in the alleged conspiracy. "The message is clear," he said.
