Anniversary sweet for bar owner

Peter Birnbaum
CELEBRATING his 10th anniversary at the Sugar Bar in Waialua is Peter Birnbaum. That is, he's celebrating to the extent it's allowed in Queen's Medical Center. That's where he ended up after losing control of his motorcycle Monday night and piling into a bunch of garbage cans while on his way home. Lynn Oakley drove by and saw a light shining upward, realized something was wrong and doubled back as did another vehicle. The second driver left to call an ambulance and Lynn stayed with the former Beethoven's Fifth owner until it arrived. Birnbaum had to undergo four hours of plastic surgery on his face, but vows to be on hand when the Sugar Bar marks its official 10th anniversary Saturday night. The man's a trooper! ...

APRIL 20 is also the birthday of a number of local people who celebrate that day, under the tongue-in-cheekiness of its being the birthday of Hitler and Napoleon III as well. Restaurateur Don Murphy, who's grown a beard for the occasion, caterer Dani Settle, Sir Speedy co-owner Della Murray and builder Matthew Fitzgerald, are also April 20 babies and share a fondness for downtown Honolulu where various parties are held annually. Fitzgerald, you may recall, at one time celebrated his birthday on another date chosen by his parents because they wanted nothing to do with Hitler. It was only a few years ago he realized it was on the birthday of the Ayatollah Khomenei, so he gave up and went back to the original date ...

TOMORROW, meanwhile, is April 19 when "George" Mullen, the female La Mariana bartender with a man's name, celebrates her birthday. All she has to help mark her day is the anniversary of the fire that destroyed the wackos in Waco and the bombing last year of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. A pity the Unabomber got picked up a few days too soon. Happy celebrations to all ...

Street of dreams

Picabo Street
INTERNET C@fe owner Mike Feeney is off skiing in Colorado this week, and who should he encounter on the slopes but Olympic women's skier Picabo Street. Street, whose first name is pronounced "Peek-a-Boo," in case you didn't know, is planning to get away to the islands next week with her boyfriend. Both Feeney and I were surprised to learn that Picabo lived on Maui for three years. One would think it would be a bit difficult to keep your skiing skills intact on the Valley Isle, though I know a few people who've been known to go downhill there ...

REMEMBER that old schoolyard song, "Hooray, hooray, the first of May." The second line is not suitable for a family newspaper, but it doesn't detract from the fact that the Brothers Cazimero are going to be busy siblings this month. They have their annual May Day concert at the Waikiki Shell, and then jet to Hilo to perform on a cruise ship for two days, after which they get ready for the May 10 gala reopening of the Hawaii Theatre downtown. In case you haven't noticed, the old marquee has been torn down and work continues apace to get the edifice looking as nice as it does inside ...

Spark plug

GUEST artist at the Hawaii Youth Symphony's Louis Vuitton 15th anniversary concert Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Blaisdell Concert Hall is Boston Symphony violinist Si-Jing Huang. State Sen. Matt Matsunaga will represent his late father, Sen. Spark Matsunaga, who came to Huang's support more than 10 years ago when the family came to Hawaii on a tourist visa and overstayed their visit. Si-Jing, then 14, got a full scholarship to Iolani from the school's Bill Lee and Spark worked hard to keep the Huangs in America. After private lessons with Dr. LaVar Krantz and training at Juilliard, Si-Jing was snapped up by the Boston Symphony on his graduation, and Sunday will be his "homecoming" concert in Hawaii ...
