Borges drops in on ex-isle stars

Jimmy Borges
SO you take a couple of weeks off for the first time in over two years and what do you do? Well, if you're Jimmy Borges you head for the mainland and spend the bulk of your time seeing old showbiz friends who usually do likewise when they return to the islands. He's back at the Alana's Cafe Picasso this weekend, after joining his daughter in California. They took in the "Palm Springs Follies" where three former isle residents are starring, all of whom told him to be sure and say hello. They are Kay Starr, Bill Dana and Tempest Storm, a trio not to be trifled with. Everyone in the cast has to be over 50, says Borges, something both he and I can appreciate. In Vegas he visited and partied with Pat Morita, Buddy Fo and wife Sammi, and ex-isle singer Anna Lea with musical conductor Mike Montano. And in L.A. it was actor Danny Kamekona, musician Ira Nepus and Carmine Fanzone, one-time music director for Dick Jensen, who's now a union bigwig ...

HAVING trouble with dates lately? No, not the kind you take out. That Golf Hall of Fame induction of Al Souza Jr. I mentioned is actually April 29, and his dad is 81, and not 85 as I'd been told he was. Also, the 175th anniversary celebration of Kawaiahao Church is this coming Sunday, the highlight of which is Rev. Abraham Akaka's mini-oratoria with music arranged by Aaron Mahi for choral presentation. The style of the celebration will be a "baby luau" birthday and school kids are being urged to send a birthday card to the church for a special 175th anniversary year exhibit ...

Don Mueller
FORGET "To be, or not to be?" Hamlet may ponder that question, but adman Don Mueller is more interested in "Three Bees." He won a Pele Award in the ad community's recent ceremony for a TV public service announcement for the Better Business Bureau entitled "Bees." Mueller also won a pair of Peles for Blockbuster Video in two categories for a TV spot called "Life is Hard." All in all, a B-B-Blockbuster night ...

Happy Tails

IT'S no old wife's tale that the Royal Hawaiian Hotel has hosted many events over the years where white tie and tails were de rigueur. Well, on May 11 the Royal will be hosting another kind of tail - the wagging kind - when canine volunteers from the Hawaiian Humane Society's Animal Assisted Therapy Program are featured in the "Tuxes & Tails" fund-raiser. Their human companions, also program volunteers, will tell some fetching tales about the dogs' abilities in helping people with special needs, and the dogs will take care of charming the audience. Should be a snap, given that the audience will consist largely of animal lovers ...

BACK from his first ever trip to New York is Ray Bumatai, who was the guest of "Tony and Tina's Wedding" producer Joe Corcoran. He's directing a production of the play for Manoa Valley Theater in June. While in N.Y., Bumatai also took in the production of Edward Albee's "A Delicate Balance," since the same author's '94 Pulitzer Prize winning play, "Three Tall Women," opens at MVT tonight ...

Heady company

FORMER isle resident Patrice Tanaka, who worked in public relations here before setting out for New York and forming Patrice Tanaka & Co., is in pretty heady company this week. On Monday she was presented with a Matrix Award for public relations from the New York Women in Communications. Other Matrix winners, also present for the awards, were Charlotte Beers (advertising), Amy Tan (books), Geraldine Laybourne (broadcasting), Martha Stewart (magazines), Liz Smith (newspapers) and Whoopi Goldberg (film). Presenters included Marianne Williamson, Katie Couric, Ann Richards, Gloria Steinem and Jessye Norman. Tanaka grew up in Kaneohe, where her parents, June and Ichiro Tanaka still reside ...
