And he would like other students to learn what it is like to spend quality time with elders.
Twice a month he and other Maryknoll High School students visit Pohai Nani care home for the elderly. Knight calls it "Student-Seniors Interacting," a program he started a year ago.
"The students enjoy it because they (residents) have a lot of stories to tell," Knight said. "The residents are happy to see us. Most of the residents are Japanese and a lot of the students are taking Japanese, so they can practice their Japanese."
Knight was awarded a $2,000 National Achievement Scholarship in an academic competition for African Americans.
"He is a focused student," said Ann Hannon, senior counselor. "He's a student that questions so well in the classroom that everybody else in class understands the issue better."
Knight has won several other scholarships. He is also working at Maryknoll, with his earnings paying his high school tuition. "I'm employed by Maryknoll High School, since my freshman year. If it wasn't for work-study and scholarships, I wouldn't be able to attend Maryknoll."
With a 4.23 grade average, the son of Teresita Knight has his pick of colleges. He has received full scholarships to Babson College, Carnegie Mellon University and University of Miami in Florida.
