Lung-impaired passengers can
get oxygen on flights

Question: Now that smoking is banned on even short flights on Hawaiian and Aloha airlines, can a passenger with impaired lungs carry on an oxygen container as personal carry-on luggage?

Answer: No. Aloha will allow a passenger to bring an oxygen tank along but it must be empty.

Both airlines will provide oxygen for passengers who may need it during a flight but arrangements must be made in advance.

Aloha requires 48 hours advance notice that a passenger may need oxygen during a flight, said Stephanie Ackerman, communications director. When reservations are made, the passenger is asked to indicate the liter-flow-rate needed.

At check in, the passenger is asked to show a doctor's note saying that oxygen may be needed. Aloha provides an aero-med oxygen cylinder. There is a $40 fee for each flight, which would be $80 for the round trip to a neighbor island.

Hawaiian also requires advance notice and payment at an airline ticket counter at least 48 hours prior to the flight, said Keoni Wagner, spokesman for Hawaiian. A doctor's note also is required at check in. Hawaiian charges $50 for oxygen each way to a neighbor island. Two bottles would be needed for the longer flight from Hawaii to the mainland and the fee would double.
