New state income tax form draws
pro, con comments

Question: When the Hawaii State Tax Department tells us to attach a copy of the front page of our federal income tax return to the Hawaii state return, does that mean both the front side and the back side of the front page or just the front side?

And who was the genius who invented this new one-page state return? I'm all for making things simpler but this is a disaster. The instructions are confusing; many of the computations are needless. It took me hours to do my state taxes this year, and it is the first time I'm unsure if I did it properly. This form is not an improvement.

Answer: Attach a photocopy of only the front side of the front page of your federal income tax return to the state return, said June Yamamoto, spokeswoman for the state Department of Taxation.

She said the tax department has received only a few comments about the new form, with some liking it and others not. Complaints about it being confusing came from people who do their own tax preparation. The design for the new form came from various people within the department but the idea of a simpler form has been around for years, she said.
