"She's really a mellow person with a great personality," Momi Kido said. "If it wasn't for drinking at the park, this wouldn't have happened."
Georgette Kido
Georgette Kido, 30, an unemployed single parent with four children between the ages of 8 and 14, has been charged with manslaughter in the death of Lynne Lindquist, 37.
Kido allegedly assaulted Lindquist on March 31 at Palolo Recreation Center. Lindquist was treated for injuries. She lapsed into a coma three days later and died last Friday morning.
The assault occurred after a women's slow-pitch softball game. Kido had played in the game, which ended about 7 p.m., and the teams gathered outside a nearby park office building to socialize.
"They started drinking," Momi Kido said. "I do it, we all do it. It's a common thing and it's become part of the game.
"But, maybe, the big lesson here is that we should just go home or not drink at the park for hours after a game," she added. "Police will come by and ask people to get rid of their beers but you can't expect them to be there every minute."
The group had been drinking for several hours when Georgette Kido recognized a member of the opposing team as a former classmate. The woman, who was Lindquist's friend, and her sister began socializing, Momi Kido said.
"I guess (Lindquist) got jealous," Kido added. "They exchanged words and she began pushing my sister.
"One thing just led to another," she said.
"What happens when everyone has had too much to drink is it changes your personality."
According to a police affidavit filed in District Court, a witness said Georgette Kido grabbed Lindquist's hair and allegedly pounded her head onto the concrete sidewalk.
She then punched Lindquist several times in the face, Bertram Leopoldo told police. Lindquist appeared limp and was not fighting back, he added.
Leopoldo managed to pull Kido off Lindquist, but before leaving the park, Kido allegedly threw several objects at Lindquist's car, shattering the windshield.
Kido, who coaches a recently organized girls softball team in Palolo, surrendered to police Friday and was charged Saturday. Requested bail is $100,000.
"We all feel hurt for what happened," Momi Kido said, "and we want to help her but we can't afford to make bail for her."
Family members are looking after her sister's children, she added.
A preliminary hearing to determine if there was probable cause for Georgette Kido's arrest will be held tomorrow in District Court.
