What's costing
$997,770 at Queen's Surf center?

Question: A sign on the fence around a construction site near the old restrooms by the Queen's Surf says it will be a new beach center. What exactly does that mean? Restrooms? The cost stated, $997,770 seems a bit excessive.

Answer: The price seems high, especially knowing that a person could buy three or four modest Hawaii homes for a million dollars. Park officials say the price covers the demolition of some existing facilities, the construction of two new buildings, and some sidewalk and walkway work.

The buildings will house restrooms and dressing rooms for men and restrooms and dressing rooms for women, said Patti Nagao, community relations specialist for the city Department of Parks and Recreation. Also included are a kitchen and snack bar for use by vendors, a covered lanai, storage and maintenance rooms.
