Trio in Order of the Silver Bicep

Clark Hatch
THERE'LL be a "Thundering Herd" of joggers attacking the arduous, some may say "killer," five-mile Tantalus trail Satur-day morning. And among this hearty bunch will be three new hexagenarians - I almost said "old fogies" until it dawned on me that I'm getting waaay too close to that category myself. Fitness guru Clark Hatch will be ushering the three into the elite "Order of the Silver Bicep" in celebration of the Hatch credo: "Fitness at Any Age." The trio, gray of pate but fleet of foot, consists of architect Lou Fulton, CPA Harry ("The Horse") Siegmund and computer whiz Burl ("Pep") Pepper. The fact that these three Hatchlings can drag themselves out of bed at 7 a.m. let alone run up Tantalus at that hour deserves some recognition ...

THE Easter Seals folks kicked off its annual "Taste of Honolulu" benefit with a luncheon this week at Trilussa in the Aloha Tower Marketplace. Ron Cruger of This Week magazine, one of the sponsors of the fund-raiser, took the mike and said, "I've waited a year to say this," and he thanked the main sponsor, Bank of Hawaii. At last year's kickoff luncheon he thanked another bank which had nothing to do with it, much to the chagrin of the Bankoh rep on hand. Philip Richardson of Current Affair (the party planner and not the TV news magazine) went down the list of 33 restaurants participating this year and asked, "Did I leave anyone out?" Someone whispered to him and he got a bit red-faced, hastily adding, "Oh and Trilussa, of course." Nothing like leaving out the host restaurant ...

YOU occasionally find a restaurant, usually in a hotel, that provides soothing music for Sunday brunch - either a soft piano or harpist or even quiet, piped-in music. But Arie Bos dances to a different drummer. Gene Krupa, say. At his new Portofino Italian Restaurant in Haleiwa's North Shore Market Place, he features live jazz music during Sunday brunch from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. ...

Hawaiian Brunei

IF you have a trip to Brunei on your schedule - and doesn't everyone? - you may see a plethora of Hawaiian outfits there, even in the royal palace. Seems the wife of the Sultan of Brunei was in Hawaii on one of her periodic shopping sprees. You may recall she fairly cleaned out several of the higher priced jewelry shops in Ala Moana Center on her previous visit. Well last weekend, besides jewelry, she had Hawaiian wear on her mind. A limousine company hired by a member of her entourage called Mamo Howell's at Ward Warehouse to see if the shop would stay open late for a "special client" they'd be bringing over. The sales clerk agreed and, sure enough, up pulls a limo and the princess and company emerge. They picked up goodies like kids pick up daisies, filling more than 40 shopping bags with women's and children's clothing and more than 50 men's shirts. Hard to picture the sultan in aloha attire, but he may be wearing just that today ...

Mark Pitta
THE Honolulu Club's headliner through Sunday, Mark Pitta, is a writer for the Dana Carvey TV show and was host of Fox's "Totally Hidden Video," but says he's most proud of getting two thumbs up from Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert for his "cool whip" routine when all were guests on the "Tonight Show." ...

Flyin' Ryan

THE skiing exploits of 11-year-old Ryan Sato have been chronicled in this space before when he bested kids in his age group in downhill skiing competition on the mainland. Ryan has been accompanying mom, Honolulu attorney Carol Asai-Sato, on ski vacations since he was 4. Now he's done it again, this time in Banff, Canada, where during Spring Break he won a gold medal in downhill slalom ski racing. This, mind you, against kids who live in ice and snow on a regular basis ...
