Garcia, Ho advance in Rip Curl Pro

MOBILE, Australia - Sunny Garcia and Derek Ho led Hawaii's surfers into the third round of the Rip Curl Pro, a Coca-Cola/ASP World Championship Tour event, by winning their round-one heats today at Bells Beach.

Yesterday, Hawaii's Conan Hayes, 21, captured his round-one heat, the first time he has won a round-one heat in 12 months on the tour, to go to the third round.

Also today, Hawaii's Shane Dorian and John Shimooka advanced to round two after finishing second and third, respectively, in their first-round heats.

However, Kaipo Jacquias and Kalani Robb lost their round-two heats today after coming in second and third, respectively, in their first-round heats yesterday.



RAINBOWS FINISH FOURTH

At Coto de Caza, Calif., the University of Hawaii men's golf team fashioned a 54-hole score of 902 to finish in fourth place at the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational yesterday.

The host Anteaters won the tournament with an 896, two strokes ahead of runner-up UCLA.

Van Wright topped the Rainbows with a 211, good for sixth place. Mike Pavao's 225 put him in a four-way tie for 15th place.

Individual honors went to UCLA's Mike Miller with a 212.



VULCANS SPLIT WITH TITANS

At Hilo, the University of Hawaii at Hilo rode the two-hit pitching of Jana Kovar to a 2-0 victory over No. 5-ranked Cal State Fullerton in the second game of a women's nonconference softball doubleheader last night.

Alicia Robles singled home Julie Bock with the run Kovar needed in the fifth inning.

The Titans won the opener, 3-0.



SEA WARRIORS WIN TWO

The Hawaii Pacific University women's softball team swept an exhibition doubleheader from Golden West College yesterday by scores of 10-0 and 5-0 at HPU's Windward Field.

Raquel De La Garza's two-hitter won the opener. Brigette Larson followed with a one-hitter.
