Dogs need rabies shots at class
as a precaution

Question: Why are rabies shots required for the dog if an owner wants to attend the dog obedience training school with his pet?

Hawaii is supposed to be rabies free and newcomers who bring a dog or cat with them are required to have those animals go through quarantine.

I'm not objecting to the shot for my dog; I'm just curious about why the Obedience Training Club of Hawaii requires it.

Answer: The rabies vaccination, required by the Obedience Training Club of Hawaii for dogs before the animals and their owners may attend classes, is a precaution.

A club leader said there was a rabies scare in Hawaii about 20 years ago and many pets were put down needlessly. The club is being careful. The incubation period for rabies is long and it's known that some animals are being smuggled into Hawaii. For safety, the volunteer Obedience Training Club of Hawaii requires the rabies shot.
