Sonitrol leader is small businessman of year

Ronald E. Jones has been named small businessman of the year by the Kalihi Business Association for his work as president of Sonitrol of Hawaii Inc., a security alarm company that uses audio and video detectors.

The company can take the video information and compress it digitally to help identify an intruder.

"That way you can tell if it is a burglar or a cat," Jones said. "Last month, we introduced high resolution, compressed video (for better pictures)."

Jones brought the Sonitrol franchise to Hawaii in 1983. He now has 1,100 clients. He also is a director and past president of the Kalihi Business Association and leads the Moanalua Gardens Neighborhood Security Watch. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and economics at the University of Hawaii.

Jones and his wife, Pat, have two children: David, 25; and Lisa, 24.
