Robb's perfect 10's not enough in Newcastle City pro surf meet

NEWCASTLE, Australia - Hawaii's Kalani Robb scored a perfect 10 in both of yesterday's first and second heats but was eliminated in the second round of the $60,000 Mark Richards Newcastle City Pro surfing meet.

Robb was the highest finisher among the Hawaii contingent. Others competing from the islands were Jason Gantz, Sunny Garcia, David Gonsalves, Conan Hayes and John Shimooka.

The meet was won by Brazilian Guilherme Herdy, with Australian Richard Lovett second.

Herdy climbed into the number 2 position on the Coca-Cola/ASP World Qualifying Series ratings.

RAINBOW VOLLEYBALL BANQUET: The awards banquet for the University of Hawaii men's volleyball team is scheduled for Sunday, April 14, at the Hawaiian Regent Hotel Ballroom.

Tickets cost $30. The event begins with no-host cocktails at 5 p.m. followed by a buffet dinner starting at 6 p.m.

NA KOA GOLF TOURNAMENT: The second annual University of Hawaii Na Koa Football Club invitational golf tournament will be held on April 19 at Hickam's Malama Bay Course.

The event is a fund-raiser for the student athletes on the UH football team.

Participation can be by corporate tee sponsor, three-person team sponsor, corporate donor or as an individual golfer.

Corporate tee sponsorships cost $1,000, three-person teams $375 and individuals $175.

SOFTBALL WINNERS: The Force won the men's C Division of the second leg of the Coors Light Grand Slam of Softball tournament, led by most valuable player Jimmy Cabrera. Imua was second and Family Stone third.

In the men's D Division, Bunch, with MVP Randy Macadangdang, took first place followed by Guava Jam and Kane Pa'ani.

In the women's C Division, MVP Belinda Ramos helped the Lancers capture the title. Guess What finished second and Total Eclipse took third place.

Lokahi won the women's D Division. Lokahi's Cynthia Hopkins was named MVP. Mixture of Class was runner-up while Breeze finished third.

The third of the four legs will be played this month.

SINGLES RACQUETBALL TOURNEY: The Dan K. Ho Memorial-Hawaii State singles racquetball tournament is scheduled for May 25-26 at Schofield Barracks' Martinez Fitness Center.

The entry fees (includes T-shirt) are $20 for active duty military and $25 for all others. The entry deadline is May 13 at 9 p.m. or postmarked by May 10.

There is a $50 late charge for all applications received after May 13.

Divisions include men's open, A, B, C, novice, seniors (35 plus), masters (40 plus) golden masters (50 plus) and women's open/A, B, C, novice and seniors (30 plus).
