Hoydahl, Kain win time trials

Norway's Rune Hoydahl of Team Giant won the second stage of the Outrigger Hotels Hawaiian Mountain Tour yesterday with a time of 11 minutes, 47.49 seconds in the 6.5-mile individual time trial for pro cyclists at Kualoa Ranch.

Canada's Roland Green (Canadian Federation) was runner-up in 11:52.85 and Lennie Kristensen (Team Giant) was third in 12:00.65.

Joe McNerney (13:18.39) was Hawaii's first pro finisher.

Shari Kain (Team Ritchey) of Half Moon Bay, Calif., won the women's division with a time of 13:58.15, just one-hundredth of a second ahead of Tammy Jacques-Grewal of Durango, Colo.



Rainbows Statistical Leaders

Three members of the top-ranked University of Hawaii men's volleyball team are ranked No. 1 in their respective categories, according to this week's national statistics.

Setter Erik Pichel leads the country in assists, averaging 19.68 per game. Hitter Yuval Katz is tops in kill average (7.70) and blocker Rick Tune is the hitting percentage leader (.516).

UH is ranked second in hitting at .366, to .373 by Lewis (Ill.)

The Rainbows (21-1) conclude their road trip with matches today and tomorrow at UC San Diego. A sweep by UH clinches the Pacific Division title of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, as well as the host spot in the MPSF Tournament, April 26-27.



Arizona waltzes to victory

The University of Arizona won the Rainbow Wahine Intercollegiate golf tournament going away yesterday, recording a team total of 887, 26 strokes ahead of second-place Brigham Young.

Host Hawaii finished eighth with a 955 total. Julie Miyagi shot a 73 yesterday at the Kaneohe Klipper Course to lead the Wahine with a 54-hole total of 234, good for a three-way tie for 22nd place.

Arizona's Kristen Register took individual honors with a 220.



Wahine move up

The University of Hawaii women's softball team moved up one spot to No. 19 in the NCAA Division I poll released yesterday. The Wahine received 126 points. Remaining No. 1 is Arizona, which received 16 of 20 first-place votes and 495 points.

UH's doubleheader yesterday at Long Beach State was rained out.
