Encounter high culinary adventure at the University of Hawaii this summer. The action features a beer appreciation series, cigar and cognac sampling, and Mediterranean cooking demonstration/tasting not to mention Judy Gorman's "How to Write a Cookbook" primer.

A sumptuous main course of the food-related curriculum features Queen Ida and the Bon Temps Zydeco Band.

Queen Ida presides at a cookbook signing and free "Creole and Cajun Cultures" talk at 7:30 p.m. May 16 at Borders Ward Centre. An 8 p.m. concert May 17 follows at Leeward Community College. Tickets are $15; call 455-0385. Her revised second edition of "Cookin' with Queen Ida" (Prima Publishing, $16.95) presents a new healthful-recipes section, plus Creole specialties such as spareribs and sausage jambalaya; okra gumbo with chicken, sausage and seafood; and Swiss steak.
