Hogg wants to root out mad beef

RATTLE of the Beasties: Mad Cowmania continues to engulf Great Britain. But, as we were trained from an early age, don't upset the Pigs. Mad Cow Disease is no laughing matter, having caused the deaths of several people in England and believed brought on by bad beef. McDonald's even banned hamburger sales in Great Britain until the matter is settled. But look who's warning that British beef should be wiped out to root out Mad Cow Disease: British agriculture minister Douglas Hogg. You may recall that a few years ago the former ag secretary used his daughter as, you should pardon the expression, a guinea pig, by having her eat a burger to show how safe beef was. His name: John Gummer ...

Miss Piggy
MEANWHILE, the pigs are hogging the spotlight in this country. "Babe" was nominated for an Oscar, and awards hostess Whoopi Goldberg did an ersatz satellite interview with "Babe" which faded out, and when it came back on there was Miss Piggy asking, "Anyone call for a Babe?" They stopped her before she could sing the theme from "Porkohan-tas." ... In Hawaii, about the only pigging out we do is over dinner, such as when the Health Department Nutrition Branch threw a birthday party for boss Claire Hughes at Kahala Moon. After the chocolate Dobash cake with haupia, Hughes was introduced to pastry chef Sandy McNally, who quickly assured her that chocolate is a major food group.

I'M reminded of one of Herb Caen's San Francisco pals who began each day with an Irish coffee and a jelly doughnut, because, he contended, they contained the four basic food groups: Alcohol, caffeine, sugar and grease ... Incidentally, fellow three-dotter Caen turns 80 (!) on April 3 and is still going strong ...

Flyin' Hawaiian

RETIRED Hawaiian Airlines captain Budd Murray was given a farewell luncheon at the Outrigger Canoe Club the other day by Hawaiian's retired pilots association. He and wife Rusty are relocating to Watsonville, Calif. Luncheon host Bob Maguire, former HAL V.P., presented Murray with the aircraft nameplate from the #2 Sikorsky plane that began interisland service for Hawaiian back in 1929. That's the same plane which carried the first airmail between the islands. The plaque's inscription reads, "Captain Budd Murray, Pioneer Aviator, Flying Boats to Fan Jets." He flew for Hawaiian for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1969 ...

IT seems fitting that a local ad agency run by two Englishmen, David McNeil and David Wilson, should hire a new account exec who comes from British stock as well. Her name is Melanie Lazenby, and if the name sounds familiar it's because her father, George Lazenby, once referred to his celluloid self as "Bond. James Bond." ... At first I thought it ironic that the new phone directory had one page missing - the page of frequently called numbers. But then I realized they printed it separately on thicker stock so it could be posted near one's phone and be more accessible ... Speaking of Oscars, one will be awarded in Hawaii next month. It's an 11-foot-tall Oscar that will be part of the decor and then auctioned off at Hospice Hawaii's April 11 fund-raiser with a Hollywood theme ...

Cho business

J. Moki Cho
THIS column chronicled the Kona-waena solar racing team from its humble beginnings in 1990 to a surprise victory in Australia's international competition, culminating with a feature film, "Race the Sun," starring Halle Berry and Jim Belushi. It actually got good notices from mainland reviewers. Hilo actor J. Moki Cho will be on hand to sign autographs on souvenir "Race the Sun" posters Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Historic Kress Building in Hilo, in between showings at the Kress Cinemas ...
