Helco alerts consumers of bogus phone pitches

HILO - Hawaii Electric Light Co. says it has no connection to anyone reportedly making telephone sales pitches to people on the utility's behalf.

A group of callers is claiming to be with Helco and is trying to sell water heaters and solar units, a company spokeswoman said.

The company says the callers are referring to themselves as "Helco participating independent contractors" and they aren't.

Anyone who thinks they may have received such a call can notify the utility. Officials said people should demand to see company identification is anyone comes to their home on the utility's behalf.

California auto club to acquire isle group

LOS ANGELES - The Automobile Club of Southern California is acquiring sister nonprofit clubs in Hawaii, Texas and New Mexico.

Spokeswoman Layna Browdy said the deal has been approved by the club's board and by the board of the national American Automobile Association, which has run the Hawaii, Texas and New Mexico groups. Browdy would not disclose takeover details.

The deal is expected to close in May. It would give the Southern California club, the largest AAA affiliate with 4.2 million current members, potential to expand its insurance, travel and auto finance businesses.
