Wahine golfers claim classic victory

EDINBURG, Texas - The University of Hawaii women's golf team maintained the lead it held after the second round to win the Lady Bronc Golf Classic by eight strokes yesterday with a 54-hole total of 984.

It was the first tournament victory for the Wahine since tying for first with Arizona in the initial Wahine Invitational in 1986.

Wichita State (992) was second.

Nancy Verastegui of Texas-Pan American shot a 76 yesterday to finish at 236, one stroke better than Hawaii's Dawn Kaneshiro who had a 78-237.

OWENS CITED: Marcus Owens was named the University of Hawaii at Hilo's most valuable basketball player at the annual awards banquet last night.

Other award winners were Brent Eberhard (most exemplary player), Jason Granger (scholar athlete), and Jayme Carvalho (most inspirational).

VULCANS SPLIT: At San Luis Obispo, Calif., the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball team beat Cal Poly-SLO, 5-3, in yesterday's first game, then lost the second, 5-4.
