91-year-old victim of Kaimuki fire found against front door

Relatives say a 91-year-old woman killed in a fire yesterday was always willing to help people.

Hui Wai Sheong Fong was always happy, especially with her grandchildren, says her son, Edwin Hui.

The woman's body was found against the front door after fire gutted the family's rented residence on Mooheau Avenue in Kaimuki. Firefighters were called shortly before 3 p.m. yesterday.

Rodney Pereira was on his way to St. Patrick's School when he saw the fire. Pereira and several other neighbors managed to open the front door before firefighters arrived but had to pull back because of the heat.

The cause is under investigation. Fire investigator Arthur Brown says burn patterns indicate the fire started in the kitchen and back porch.

Big Isle group in tangle with Helco over wires, rare bird

A Big Island environmental group says it will be "uh, oh" for the 'a'o if a utility company doesn't bury its wires along the Puna coast.

Friends of the Red Road yesterday filed a suit in federal court to force Hawaii Electric Light Company to take down about two miles of wire.

The group says the power lines coincide with the preferred flight plan of the threatened 'a'o, a threatened native seabird with a 2.5-foot wingspan.

Attorney Isaac Hall, representing the group, says the company should put the power lines underground.

But attorney David Sherman, representing the utility company, says an environmental assessment shows that the wires would have no significant impact on the threatened seabirds. He says the lawsuit is another attempt to stop the project.

Isles are location for one Disney film, possibly two

So you always wanted to be in the movies?

Walt Disney Studio will film part of one feature film on Oahu this fall with the chances "very good" of shooting a second picture here this summer.

Disney will film the $17 million family comedy "Meet ... the Deedles" for two weeks at various Oahu locations this September.

Disney executives have been visiting the various counties evaluating film locations.

Jerry Ketcham, Disney's executive production manager for motion pictures, wants to film all of the live action film "George of the Jungle" on Oahu. That film is scheduled to be produced in July.

Tot found in Kailua pool dies in Kapiolani Hospital

A 15-month-old Waipahu boy died last night at Kapiolani Hospital after he apparently wandered away from his parents during a party at a Kailua home Saturday and was later found floating in a swimming pool.

He was identified as Kaleo Chong.

Property dispute blamed for killing on Big Island

HILO - A dispute over property was the reason Raymond Althouse shot to death his neighbor, Jonathan Dorr, Sunday at Dorr's home in Ocean View, police said.

Althouse, 38, was charged yesterday with second-degree murder, possession of a sawed-off shotgun and use of a firearm in a felony. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Use of alcohol and drugs contributed to the shooting, police said.

Dorr, 32, was found in his house shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday. He and Althouse had been seen arguing at an Ocean View store earlier.

An autopsy yesterday confirmed that Dorr was killed by a shotgun wound in the chest. On Monday police found the shotgun believed used in the shooting when they searched Althouse's home.

Felony assault case opened in beating death

Police have opened another felony assault case - the third in the past two weeks - in the beating of a man found early yesterday in Chinatown. The man suffered a skull fracture in the 4:50 a.m. attack.

Police found him at Smith and Pauahi streets after an anonymous caller reported a man lying unconscious and bleeding on the sidewalk with facial injuries. His identity is unknown. Hospital officials have declined to comment on his condition.

Meanwhile, the medical examiner's office yesterday conducted an autopsy on Warren S. Nakamura, 52, who was found on a sidewalk at Maunakea and Kukui streets early Friday. He suffered severe head injuries and died at Kuakini Hospital that evening. Results of the autopsy have not been released.

Police do not believe his beating is linked to an assault early March 9 at a Shell station on N. King Street, said homicide Detective Anderson Hee.

Howard Ebisu, 51, was found unconscious with a head injury beside his pickup truck around 3:30 a.m. and remains in grave condition at Queen's Hospital. "He's comatose and there's no indication he may come out of it," Hee said.
