Relatives say a 91-year-old woman killed in a fire yesterday was always willing to help people.
Hui Wai Sheong Fong was always happy, especially with her grandchildren, says her son, Edwin Hui.
The woman's body was found against the front door after fire gutted the family's rented residence on Mooheau Avenue in Kaimuki. Firefighters were called shortly before 3 p.m. yesterday.
Rodney Pereira was on his way to St. Patrick's School when he saw the fire. Pereira and several other neighbors managed to open the front door before firefighters arrived but had to pull back because of the heat.
The cause is under investigation. Fire investigator Arthur Brown says burn patterns indicate the fire started in the kitchen and back porch.
Friends of the Red Road yesterday filed a suit in federal court to force Hawaii Electric Light Company to take down about two miles of wire.
The group says the power lines coincide with the preferred flight plan of the threatened 'a'o, a threatened native seabird with a 2.5-foot wingspan.
Attorney Isaac Hall, representing the group, says the company should put the power lines underground.
But attorney David Sherman, representing the utility company, says an environmental assessment shows that the wires would have no significant impact on the threatened seabirds. He says the lawsuit is another attempt to stop the project.
