HPU's Malbeck named first-team All-American

Juergen Malbeck, Hawaii Pacific University's 7-foot-1 center, has been named a first-team NAIA All-American.

The native of Noerdlingen, Germany, led HPU in scoring with 19.2vml6 Juergen

Malbeck points per game and averaged 8.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. He was the only center named to the 10-member first team.

Named to the NAIA second team was 6-foot-10 junior center Ionatona Enosa of BYU-Hawaii, who averaged 15.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

Both players were instrumental in their teams reaching the NAIA tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

HPU guard Steve Richey and BYUH guard Omar Parker received honorable mention.

James Cason, a senior at Birmingham-Southern College (Ala.) who is on target to set an NAIA record for field-goal accuracy in a season, has been named NAIA Player of the Year.

Jim Reid, who guided Georgetown (Ky.) to the No. 1 ranking in the final men's poll, was named NAIA Coach of the Year.



BIELA SETS MARK Former Kalaheo High School track and field all-star Goshka Biela set an NCAA Division II national indoor record for 800 meters two weeks ago in Indianapolis. Biela, who was the 1994 Hawaii state 800-meter champion, clocked 2:09.1 for Lewis University of Illinois.

SOCCER CLINIC The Spring Soccer Clinic at Kamehameha Schools will feature Chris Petrucelli, head coach of Notre Dame's 1995 NCAA women's champions, and Bill Hempen of Duke University.

The dates are March 25-29, with a 9 a.m.-to-noon session for ages 8-11 and a 5-to-7:30 p.m. session for ages 12-17. The fee is $150.

Special accommodations can be made for Olympic Development players and those participating in the Kirk Banks Tournament.

GOALKEEPERS' CLINIC The annual Bob Barry Goalkeeper Clinic will be held June 6-8 at the Iolani School soccer fields from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.

The clinic is designed to show boys and girls, ages 8 and older, the technical and tactical training of goalkeepers.
