Musashimaru still in contention

OSAKA, Japan - Takanohana and Kotonowaka moved into a tie for the lead with 8-1 records as Takanonami suffered his second defeat today, the ninth day of the 15-day Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.

Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani of Hawaii, improved to 6-3, sending out No. 1 maegashira Kenko (3-6) with hand thrusts. Konishiki, or Salevaa Atisanoe from Hawaii, improved to 5-4 with a win over Mainoumi.

Sheridan wins Oahu Senior AJA baseball crown

Sheridan won the second game of a doubleheader with Waipahu, 11-8, at Ala Wai Field yesterday to clinch the Oahu Senior AJA baseball championship.

It was Sheridan's fourth victory against two losses in the best-of-seven series.

Ron Doi pitched the first five innings for Sheridan and left with a 9-5 lead. Eugene Myers finished up to earn the save.

Corey Ishigo sparked Sheridan with two singles, a double and home run four runs batted in.

Sean Okimoto and Duke Chinen each had two hits. Chinen also drove in two runs.

Waipahu's Nolan Tokuda and Brent Shimokawa had four and three hits, respectively.

Tokuda and Shimokawa each paired hits as Waipahu won the opener, 5-3, to keep its hopes alive.

Tokuda also pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits, walking three and striking out three.


  • HURSTY WINS BIATHLON: Peter Hursty finished first in the Natatorium Biathlon yesterday with a time of 24 minutes, eight seconds. The event consisted of an 800-meter swim and a 2.5-mile run held at Ala Moana Park.

    Heather Martz-Jorris was the first women's finisher with a time of 27:07. Kass Ohriner (27:48) was the runner-up and Tina Sandlin (29:23) was third.

    Stephen Adler (24:12) was right behind Hursty with Michael Fitzgerald (24:56) third.

  • FOTI, LAMBERT FIRST: John Foti won the men's canoe event in the Poai Puni Series yesterday with a time of one hour, 53 minutes, three seconds over the 12-mile course. Walter Guild (1:53:44) was second and James Foti (1:53:56) third.

    Sonia Lambert took the women's division in 2:22:16. Loretta Toth (2:26:10) was next followed by Gail Grabowsky (2:27:02).

    In the men's 12-mile kayak race, Stuart Gaessner (1:39:10) finished ahead of David Horner (1:42:48) and Guy Pere (1:43:51).

    Kelly Fey won the women's kayak race with a time of 1:55:37. Nicole Wilcox (1:59:36) was runner-up and Karen Kiefer (2:06:38) took third.

  • HPU SWEEPS PACIFIC LUTHERAN: The Hawaii Pacific University women's softball team won a nonconference doubleheader from Pacific Lutheran University by scoring in the final inning in both games. In the opener the Sea Warriors won, 2-1, on a wild pitch by PLU's Janelle Gunter in the bottom of the 11th inning.

    Star Perry opened the 11th with a single and Jarrett Lono pinch ran for her. Lynette Williams followed with her fifth single and the runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Gunter then intentionally walked Lea Siufanua but a wild pitch to the next batter allowed Lono to score.

    In the second game, Taire Geolina singled home Brigette Larson with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, give HPU (13-7) a 6-5 triumph.

    Williams had two doubles and three RBIs.

  • SPENSER SUFFERS DEFEAT: At Los Angeles, Marc Mirizzi's two-run, two-out single led Southern Cal to a 4-3 win over Arizona State in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game yesterday. Mirizzi got the hit off Maui's Kaipo Spenser (2-4).
